Current version: working prototype version 1.04

Current workbook updated - MacFarlane - family trees & branches v1.04 12162011

Based on mutation rate calculations written by Anatole Klyosov:

  • This is a zip file, including the PHYLIP software, that should be unzipped into a root directory to run properly

Extract the zipped file in the root of any directory (example C or F drive)

  • The prototype has been built on a WIN XP system (SP3) using Excel 2002 (XP) with SP3

CASE STUDY - MacFarlane - family trees and branches version 1.03
1. Haplogroups
Select member DNA results to research and paste into this worksheet
2. Phylogenetic Trees
2. PT format data
Format data selected in the 1. Haplogroup worksheet to format for phylogenetic tree processing
FTDNA Multi-Allele data converted to Single-Allele data using 'Convert FTDNA Projects.xls' written by Dennis Wright
2. PT Import Here - worksheet imported directly from 'Convert FTDNA Projects.xls - by Dennis Wright
2. PT Corrected Data - worksheet imported directly from 'Convert FTDNA Projects.xls - by Dennis Wright
Changes the FTDNA multi-allele format to single allele format
2. PT log
Log of member results not selected in the formatting process (do not meet the marker requirement such as 67 markers)
3 & 4. Mutation Rate calculation & build tree/branches
After building the phylogenetic trees identify clusters.
Find the kit numbers of those in the clusters
Transfer the kitnumber and marker data from the 1. Haplogroups worksheet to the '3 & 4. mr calc & build tree' worksheet
Mutation rate calculation:
B total number of haplotypes count total haplotypes in list
A base haplotypes unchanged count haplotypes that have not changed from the modal haplotype
  # mutations count mutations
  Enter % acceptable

If the logarithmic and linear mutation rate calculations are within a std dev of sigma 2 (95% confidence interval)
then the haplotypes are related else the haplotypes need to be further divided into additional trees or branches.
