The Sheehans were dispossessed of their lands in
the main during the
Desmond Rebellion and our branch found refuge in East Kerry.
They
farmed their and educated their way out of that bogland into
property
and status by the start of the 1800's. Given their own
experience they
were the backbone of the Land Wars and also political resistance
including the Irish Republican Brotherhood.
The extended family also produced two MP's JD Sheehan who had
been
Head Centre of the IRB in Killarney at the time of the 1867
rising. He
became an East Kerry MP at the end of the 19th century. The son
of
another Fenian out in 67 DD Sheehan also became an MP in Mid
Cork, and
in the early part of the century he was one of the most
influential
and active people in politics, in Ireland.
DD's grandson Nial, now living in Germany, has an excellent
contribution in wpedia , in fact it could serve as a model for
how all
such historical material should be properly constructed and
referenced. It is worth visiting for the references alone ! I am
currently finishing the edit of a book on DD himself.
While DD relate to the North West and Mid part of Cork rather
than the
South West, never the less there is a wealth of historical
detail
applicable to the life and times of all Cork and West Munster
for the
late 19th, early 20th, century. I recommend a visit to the
material to
anyone with an interest in the period, but be warned, it is
easier to
go in than leave, such is the scope and content of Nail's
material.
The article can be accessed at ......

Enjoy ! Slan is beannacht, Donal O'Siodhachain.

'Beara to Brefine'
by Donal O'Siodhachain
|
Bill a chara,
just a reminder to your readers that while my own 'Beara to
Brefine'
on the Long March is out of print, some copies are available
from used
book dealers. The 87 first edition is titled 'The Great Retreat'
but
it was a rushed and not a very good production. Some copies of
that
too are available.
The 92 edition Beara to Brefine is a much better production with
many
of Staffords line drawings included. The bad news is that they
can
cost up to ten times the published cover price, so anyone who
bought
while in Ireland fifteen years back, be prepared for a nasty
shock
financially.
copy and google the following to call up the second hand book
dealers.
a reasonably priced copy may have slipped through the net. Slan
